A View From The Bridge Essay A View from the Bridge was written by Arthur Miller in 1955. The play is a modern tragedy with some elements of an Aristotelian tragedy. The play is set in the 1950s in the gullet of New York which is Red Hook.  In this essay I am going to explore if the protagonist, Eddie Carbone, is guilty for his downfall; which then leads to his death. A tragic hero has a fatal flaw which leads to his downfall, in Eddies case, he is attracted to his niece. This causes him to be overprotective and not let her meet anyone else, as he wants her for himself. The tragic heros downfall is brought about by ignoring advice; In Eddies case, he doesnt listen to Alfieri, the lawyer and chorus of the play, when he tells him to let Catherine go. My first impression of Eddie is a tall, big and quite overweight man, with little hair and a slowly dying face. He is an outgoing and hardworking man who provides for his family. I got some of these impressions because the chorus, Alfieri, describes him as, He is forty a husky slightly overweight longshoreman. The first person he talks to in the play is his niece, Catherine. At first he is caring when he comments on her new dress. But then he becomes a bit protective about her wearing it as he thinks it is too short and that men outside would stare. He is also reluctant to let her to go to work at first but when he sees she is sad he lets her do it, which shows us that he is more willing to make his niece happy than his wife. He talks to his wife, Beatrice like he would to any other wife but he does not go over to her to give her a hug or a kiss, just simply tells her something. But when he does, he sometimes holds her hands affectionately. This tells us that he expresses his feelin gs more easily in gestures than in words. Before Marco and Rodolpho arrive, Eddie is not too fond of them staying at his house, he complains that he may end up sleeping on the floor because of them. But then he talks about it being an honour for letting them stay over. When the cousins actually arrive, his attitude towards them changes dramatically. Earlier on he was saying Listen, as long as they know where there gonna sleep, and when they arrive he greets them;  Youre welcome, Marco, we got plenty of room here. Katie, give them supper, heh? Later on he only comes to address Marco only as he realises that Catherine is attracted to Rodolpho. He is coming more and more to address Marco only. He notices this as she keeps talking about Rodolphos facial appearance. The fall of Eddie Carbone begins when the cousins moved in. Rodolpho and Catherine are instantly attracted to each other, which angers Eddie very much as he is also attracted to her. Beatrice worries that Eddie dislikes Rodolpho because he likes Catherine, he responds, He sings on the ships, didja know that? This gives us a hint that he is trying to find things wrong with Rodolfo.  After this he visits Alfieri, the lawyer. He goes to ask him if he would be able to stop Rodolfo and Catherine marrying each other, but Alfieris advice to him is the child has to grow up and go away, and the man has to learn to forget. Because after all, Eddie what other way can it end? One other thing that Alfieri says hints at the truth, She wants to get married, Eddie. She cant marry you, can she? Eddie replies Whatre you talking about, marry me! I dont know what the hell youre talking about! He obviously knows what hes talking about, and Beatrice knows as well. The violent reaction from Eddie shows us that he fells ashamed that he loves his niece and fears that he will lose his dignity and respect.  Eddie doesnt listen to his advice but leaves the office in a dilemma. Knowing he cant do anything about Rodolfo, his attitude towards him changes dramatically. He stops talking to him in a civil manner and only speaks to mock him, such as when Rodolfo says, Lemons are green, and Eddie replies, I know lemons are green, for Christs sake. He says this almost to point out that Rodolfo is stupid. Every time he criticises Rodolfo he seems to look for support in his older brother, Marco. When he tries to teach Rodolfo how to fight, we see Marco being protective of his brother. When Eddie tries to land a punch on Rodolfo, the stage directions say it mildly staggers Rodolfo, Marco rises. After they have finished, Marco has his own test of masculinity. Marco says Can you lift this chair, a seemingly easy task. But Eddie cannot complete it and Marco carries on with showing him as the stage directions say, Rodolfo and Catherine have stopped dancing as Marco raises the chair over his head. Marco is face to face with Eddie, a strained tension gripping his eyes and jaw, his neck stiff, the chair raised like a weapon over his head and he transforms what might appear like a glare of warning into a smile of triumph. This shows us that Marco is no longer in support of Eddie and it is also a sign that he will defend and protect his brother if he is harmed. This leaves the audience tense at the end of Act One, which will make us focus more on the play. We become anxious about what happens from here on. We also know that a tragedy or something that will lead up to it, is going to occur in the beginning.

A woman made a Yemeni future The Republic of Yemen is one of the poorest countries in Arab world. Recently, Yemeni politic was rule by plain dictatorship for a long term. The economy is poor and corruptions were rampant in Yemen. Hence the Yemeni people made a decision to stand up to establish a democratic government. The Yemen uprising was up on January 2011 in Sana'a University which is in Yemen's capital. The leader of the protests was Tawakel Karman from Yemen. This essay will explain who Tawakel Karman is and why her accomplishments were recognized to the Nobel Peace Prize committee.Tawakel Karman is one of the greatest political activists in the world. She was born in 1979 in the port town of Taiz, which face with the Red Sea. She has been active  in searching for  freedom of expression  and  women rights in the Arab words. At the same time, she is a journalist and  a member of the  Al-Islah, which is  the largest  opposition party in Yemen. Tawakel and the prot esters   shouted ‘Day for rage’ among the troops and armed government officers at the seaport of  Aden  in northern  Yemen.?She is one of the three persons who won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2011 and became the first woman from Arabia to be awarded the prize. She has  continued to regularly partake in protest  activities to  insist on  freedom of expression  and women rights  over the past five years. The Nobel Peace Prize  Committee  in Norway admired  her achievements of â€Å"seeking  full  attribution  to the society,  claiming the  safety  and rights  of women  without violence†. In the social background of the affair, there was huge discontent towards the long term dictator government in the Arab worlds.?Thus, she decided to lead not only the victims of ‘The Arab Spring’ but also all the people who deserve better human rights. Thus, Tawakel Karman’s achievements have brought great changes not just in Yemen but in many other Arabian countries too. There are three reasons why Tawakel Karman's achievements were deserving for winning the Nobel Peace Prize. First, she made contributions to improve Yemeni human rights and freedom of expressions, which were in a nonviolent way.Despite of the Yemeni dictator Saleh resorted to arms, she pressed for the improvement in social affair, which were great things. For example, she led a huge number of the Yemeni people and chanted their slogan in chorus again and again. Those incidents were broadcasted all over the world and aroused sympathy from many people. She indicated the Yemeni people's strong intensions through an interview. ‘We Yemeni people do not yield the dictator-ruled government and we want freedom in a peaceful way. ‘ Second, she insisted that the Yemeni woman should be liberated from Yemeni traditional dress codes.For example, by taking off her headdress and showing her face, she insisted that the dress code is enfo rced not by Koran, but by male-dominated Yemeni society. Her smiles were different from what we Japanese are used to have seen, she looked very confident. However, if she did not insist the importance to break away from such a bad custom, Yemeni woman still could not share their real feelings. That is to say, they would be forced to un-sensitive communication. If I were a Yemeni woman, I could not stand such a small world and might have gone insane at least.Finally, she co-founded the human rights group ‘Woman Journalists Without Chains' to make the Yemeni woman belong to all of the Yemeni society with safety. The Life of Susan Brownell Anthony

She is a leader, an advocate, a reformist, an educational reformer, a labor activist, a seeker of justice, a fighter of freedom, a crusader, a humanitarian, a rebel and most of all, a woman of suffrage. Susan B. Anthony led the life of struggles as she pushed forth the rights of women as equal citizens, amidst the dominance governing of men of her time. The Early Life Imagine a long line of Green Mountains, rushing streams tumbling through rocky gorges, beautiful meadows and forests, old bridges coupled with pleasantly old-fashioned farmhouses and roadways.This picturesque scenery is where Susan B. Anthony was born, a second child and second eldest to Daniel and Susan Read Anthony of Adams, Massachusetts on February 15, 1820. She grew up in the loving and welcoming arms of her mother and father. Although she lived in a somber and quiet home, theirs was a home filled with respect, affection and great comfort. Susan as a child is precocious, brimming with intelligence and life. At an e arly age of three she was taught to spell and read.She has great ambition and does things that are considered beyond a girl’s capacity. Her father, one of her greatest influences was as a manager of a milling company and an abolitionist enthusiast at that time. At the age of 10, she was permitted by her kind and charitable mother to accompany his father in his work and at the age of eleven was able to detect the injustice seen on women (Harper, 1969). She noticed a worker named Sally Ann who was exceptional in weaving not rising to a position of an overseer.A man named Elijah, who was the overseer at that time, kept going over to Sally Ann when dire situations come and in turn Sally Ann always manages to deliver and correct the problems. And so when she asked her father why ever Sally Ann never got the position as an overseer, he replied that it’s because she was a woman, the dissatisfaction of Susan grew up in a place filled with women. Most of the mill’s weave rs were young girls and as custom, they reside with the millowner.Susan together with her mother took care of these women and cooks and packs a dinner pail for them. Education was very important in their household. When the family moved to Battenville, there is an old fashioned district school taught by a man in winter and a woman in summer, however their views on teaching a girl lessons that were never insisted upon her such as Mathematics pushed her father to build a private school employed with the best teachers and only admitted children willing to associate with his own.Girls were taught sewing, spelling as well as reading. Susan at the age of 15 became a teacher herself. This caused much debate from their neighbors for women are only employed or only work when situations are pressed upon them. In her time, women’s values as equals were ignored and the right to vote where given to a chosen few, however this was not the case in their household and Susan never forgot the m ark that forever instilled her to fight. Issues of slavery also intermingle, she once heard her father saying never to buy cotton raised by slavery.She joined meetings and conferences along with her father by the time she was old enough and thus began her quest for freedom (Lutz, 1959). The Susan B. Anthony as an Abolitionist Members of Susan Anthony’s house during Sundays would meet at their farm where they were occasionally joined by Frederick Douglass and William Lloyd Garrison. In 1956 she became an agent of American Anti-Slavery Society wherein she’s active in conducting speeches and meetings. As a result she was mobbed, threatened. She was hung in effigy and her image was dragged around the streets.In 1963, together with her closest friend, Elizabeth Stanton that she met on 1951 created Women's National Loyal League wherein they fought for the rights of Black women as full citizens by means of being allowed to vote. They were bitterly disappointed when their peti tion didn’t appear in the Fourteenth and Fifteenth Amendments, however continued their campaign in her newspaper The Revolution that she herself is the editor and publisher. An Educational Reformer At the age of 26, Susan Anthony was the head of the girl’s department at Canajoharie Academy fro two years earning $110 a year.It was in 1953 that she called for a convention in which pinpoint the issues regarding better pay and positions for women. She reiterated that it should be so because men and women’s minds are of no difference so better opportunities should also be given to women ad ex-slaves such as education and equal treatment. One of her most memorable exploits was during the 1890’s, when she raised $50,000 to secure the admittance of women in the University of Rochester putting her life insurance policy in value to meet up the deadline.The said University was forced to submit due to their promise and as a result, during 1900’s women were adm itted for the first time. As a Temperance Worker Her family always condemned the drinking of liquor.Back when she was a head of the girl’s department, she joined the Daughter of Temperance, a movement that notifies the public of the effects of liquor on families and campaigned for a law against it. There was a time when she had been refused to speak in a convention and in turn she walked out and held a convention of her own. Together with Elizabeth Stanton, she formed another organization and fought their way to the creation of laws against liquors. A Woman Suffragist and a Campaigner Anthony believed that in orde r for men and women to become equal, a necessity for women to be allowed to vote should be in order.It symbolizes the capacity for women to decide and at the same time be acknowledged of their worthiness. It was the onset of voting in 1872 that she defiantly casted her ballot in the presidential elections and was arrested because of it. In turn she denied that it wasn’t a crime and refused to pay for the penalty. She argued that she was merely exercising her right as a citizen of the country and recited the preamble of the federal constitution wherein she stressed that the citizens of the country, not white men or male men forms the union.It was in February 15, 1906, at the age of 86, Susan B. Anthony died. Ten thousand mourners grieved for her. In her later years she had extensively traveled the world seeking for woman empowerment. She was able to organize 48 countries with the same cause. It was 100 years after her birthday that 19th amendment was passed on, extending the r ights of women to vote. A Conclusion In the end, it is safe to say that Susan B. Anthony is truly a woman ahead of her time. She might have lived a life full of struggles but she had lived on to the fullest.She had fought her way against the system in order to right what she thinks is an injustice. In the end, she is truly a hero and a martyr that maybe in one way or another, had not been not much credited upon. She is a symbol of truth and a mother of all women. She represents the women of today that now know how to fight for their rights. She had gone a long way but in the end, she fought hard and won hard. Her legend lives on as women continue to uphold their worth as women in the society, amidst the onslaught of injustices and oppression.The fight still continues as long as there are still those who suffer. The factors that influence the accuracy of estimation are children in Year 10 are more mature than children in Year 7. On average Children in Year 10 are more intelligent than children in Year 7. This probably would be because Year 10 students have studied subjects into further depth than children in Year 7. METHOD To verify this I will do a sample of the boys in our school. To do this I will find the total number of children in our school and sort it out according to Y10s and Year 7s. I will find out this information by going to the school office and finding out the figures. Out of this population, I will do a stratified sampling of 60 children. To do a stratified sampling of 60 children in the whole school, I will find the proportion of boys in Year 10 and Year 7. STRATIFIED SAMPLING In a stratified sample, the population is first divided into categories and the number of members in each category is determined. The sample is then made up of these categories in the same proportions as they are in the population. Random sampling chooses the required numbers in each category. In a random sample, every member of the population has an equal chance of being chosen. To obtain a sample of 60 students stratified according to Year 10 and Year 7; I will have to calculate the number of boys from Year 10 and Year 7, which must be represented in the sample. A Sample of Students Year Boys Boys 10 110 33 7 89 27 TOTAL 199 60 Altogether there are 1013 (one thousand and thirteen) students in our school. To work out the proportion of boys in Year 10 and Year 7, First of all I found out how boys were in Year 10 and Year 7. I added these together to get 199(one hundred and ninety-nine). Then I got the number of boys in each year and divided it by the total (199) and then multiplied it by 60(sixty). I rounded this answer to a whole number. This is because it would be an easier number to work with and you cannot round people to decimal places or significant figures. In my survey, I went to the school office and I got all of the boys names in Year 10 and Year 7 on two separate pieces of paper. By each name was a number. To find out which boys from Year 10, I had to ask to estimate the length of the straight line, I put all the boys names in Year 10 in a hat and picked the amount of boys needed to estimate the length. I did the same with the Year 7 boys. I already knew how many boys I needed to ask from each year because I had already done a stratified sample and worked out the numbers needed. Example 1: In Year 10 there are 110 boys. . Example 2: In Year 7 there are 89 boys . Now I have collected all the information, it is time to do my Survey. I will draw an accurately measured line and ask the proportion of boys in Year 10 and Year 7 to estimate the length of the line. I found out the proportion of the boys in Year 10 and Year 7 by doing a stratified sample. My next step is to do a pilot study. I will ask about five boys in Year 7 and Year 10 to ensure my coursework is done to a high-quality standard and my question does not seem to force an answer out of them. From the pilot study I will also be able to tell if my survey is grammatically correct. When I say this, I mean if the spelling, punctuation, and grammar are all correct. SPECIFICATIONS FOR MY SURVEY Paper with survey must be held approximately the same distance from each participant so that everyone sees the survey as well as each other. If the survey is held closer, it may give the student a better idea of the lines length. Weather conditions must be similar if it is cloudy, there is less light for the contestant to see the paper with and they are not given as good a view as if it were a sunny day. Survey must be done during school hours so that most of the subjects are in a similar frame of mind. No items of measurement should be nearby, so that the subject has nothing to compare the line/angle to. 60 people must take part in the survey All participants must be asked whether they are able to see the diagrams clearly. Exactly the same words must be used when explaining about the survey The participant must spend no more than two minutes (after pilot study The student may not communicate with anyone else who is able to view the paper or who has done the survey. PILOT STUDY I performed my pilot study and I found out that my survey was done to a good standard was understandable and got to the point. The boys I tested it on commented that it was set out well and did not need altering. One thing they all asked me was, Did I get it Right or How much was I off by. This made me think for a while and in the end I concluded that I should a Deviation and a Percentage Error column in my results table.
